Driver assaults traffic cop after he is given a fine

This traffic cop was assaulted by a driver who he was giving a fine to. The man demanded his license back and all hell broke loose.

Shocking video has emerged of a roadside altercation between a motorist and a traffic officer. In the video, a man can be seen grappling with the officer for a driver’s license before things took a turn for the worst.

The incident is believed to have taken place on the N12 in Potchefstroom, it is not clear when exactly the incident took place.

News24 spoke to Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson Simon Zwane. He said that the man who assaulted the officer was arrested on Monday. It is still not clear if the man has appeared in court yet.

Zwane said they are not sure of the full details around the attack and what lead to it. Based on the video evidence, it seems that the officer was just doing his job and the motorist was not prepared to suffer the consequences of his actions.

“We are aware of the video and we fully condemn such behaviour. It is unacceptable for anyone to treat a traffic officer in that manner,” Zwane told News24 on Tuesday.

“He has been arrested. He was arrested, yesterday. He actually should have been arrested on the day [Sunday] the incident occurred.

“Motorists should behave, respect the road and respect those who are enforcing the rules.

“If you have a grievance with a traffic officer, their cars are marked – with numbers – so you can file a complaint with the head office,” he added.

North West police spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Pelonomi Makau told TimesLIVE that the suspects will appear in court on Thursday.  The suspects (the man and a female passenger) were charged with common assault.

“They are both in custody as they failed to give the court their residential address‚” said Makau

Authorities have called for a “strong warning” to be sent to motorists who disrespect the law.
